An appropriate driving License is a legal requirement for operating any motor vehicle in Kolkata, west Bengal, India. A driver’s license which is issued by the competent authority in Kolkata, West Bengal state is valid throughout India. Driving license can be used as photo id in Kolkata West Bengal and other places of India.

Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal state. Any person who wishes to drive a motor vehicle in kolkata, India has to first obtain a learner’s license for the purpose of learning to drive a two wheeler ( bike, scooter)/ three wheeler ( auto)/ four wheeler ( car, jeep, van)/ commercial vehicle ( bus, lorry, truck, tractor) . The person must then be tested before the nearest RTO (Regional transport officer) in Kolkata before grant of permanent driving license.

RTO ( Regional Transport Officer) of west Bengal government is the authority to issue driving license in Kolkata. A person should not be less than 20 years of age if he wants to learn to drive a transport vehicle and 18 years for passenger cars , bikes and scooters.

The following documents are to be submitted for getting learners license along with prescribed fee.

Proof of age: birth certificate/ SSC certificate/ pass port

Proof of Citizen ship: Election Card/ Passport

Proof of residence: passport, ration card, electoral roll, electricity or telephone bill.

Photograph: 3 copies of passport size.

Validity of driving license for private motor vehicles is 5 years or up to an age of 50 years of licensee. Driving license has to be renewed after the expiry of validity.
